What is The Overnight about?
Jeff has many long-winded explanations that he would be thrilled to bore you with, should you but start to ask him about it. But the shorter answer is, it’s a place for artists and dreamers who often find themselves on the fringe of so-called mainstream society to get together and share ideas, songs, stories, crafts, and flirtation (if that’s your bag) in a safe, open welcoming space for you to be whoever you are. Poly, mono, bi, straight, gay, lesbian, transgendered, kinked, vanilla, religious beliefs of choice, goth, corporate, preppy, punk, furry, other kin, loud, quiet, shy, dancing on tables . . .you get the picture. Whatever you are, you’re welcome here.
But I don’t know anyone!
That’s okay! A lot of people don’t. You could join the Livejournal community and meet some of the people who are attending; you could drag one of your friends to The Overnight; or be brave and go by yourself and be whoever you want and see what happens. Because so many of us tend to be alienated in one way or another in our lives, many of us are very friendly and welcoming.
What is there to do there?
A lot of things! There’s the slack room for you to lie around and do nothing in, many local artists performing (including the lovely and talented Catherine Moon), a few workshops for you to wrap your head around, vendors to throw your money at, a lovely dinner prepared by local chef/boy genius Alex Parise, and all sorts of new and interesting people for you to interact with. And oh yeah, those cult movies. I promise, there will be something you dig there no matter who you are.
How big of a freak show are we talking here?
Webster’s defines freak as:
Freak
Noun
1. A person or animal that is markedly unusual or deformed.
2. Someone who is so ardently devoted to something that it resembles an addiction; "a golf addict"; "a car nut"; "a control freak".
Isn't that all of us? I mean, sure, there will definitely be people there who will look the part on the outside but when you talk to them you find them as normal as the stereotypical boy/girl next door, and there will be some people who look like they stepped out of a GAP ad, who put Marilyn Mansion to shame, and other people who don’t fit into either category. The Overnight is a great place for us to challenge all of our own internal perceptions of what's "freakish" and what's "normal" and how we all relate together. I'll tell you one thing--it's never boring.
Is this some kind of fetish/poly/pagan a go go thing?
Yes and no. You will certainly find a lot more people in those kind of “lifestyles" than at, say, the mall (in theory . . .), but this event isn’t geared towards any “lifestyle" in particular. Yeah, there’s going to be people there who want to hook up, but that’s true of any public place, really. No one is going to force you to do anything you don’t want to do (and if anyone were to try, we have really nice security people for that). We really try to gear the event so there’s something for everyone to do, whether you are a first time freak or have been a twenty year self-defined freak. There are events for the more social and the less social and all sorts of music and performances for you to watch if you feel shy. And remember, going to a bondage workshop doesn’t make you kinked anymore than going to church makes you Christian. So if there’s a tiny voice in your head saying, hey that could be cool, or hey, I’m kinda curious about that, why not check it out? Or workshops are given by thoughtful, well informed people who talk frankly about their topics.
What’s the difference between the Rocky Horror Ritual Show and seeing it at a theater?
Well, for one thing, the script changes every year, whereas a theater performance stays more or less the same with some callback changes. Another big notable difference is that we don’t show the movie while the performers are performing. The RHRS is performed by local casts who have a blast getting to do something a little different than they do every Saturday. It’s a great time for everyone!
What’s the charity slave auction?
1. It is *not* a fetish event.
2. All the money goes to ACT UP, a local AIDS activist not for profit doing important work for a disease that has not gone away, despite the lack of recent media.
3. There will be specific rules about what you can and cannot do with your slaves (no sex acts, etc.).
4. It’s for fun for a great charity! Each of the slaves will play a part (sexy secretary, cat girl, etc.) and you will get the pleasure of their company for an hour in exchange for your donation.
5. For more information and up to the minute auction info, join our Livejournal community . If you don't have a livejournal, you can get one here for free.
What should I wear?
Anything you want! Really. You’ll see anything from jeans and a t shirt to corsets and ballroom skirts to amazing diy creations. This is a great place for you to wear whatever makes you feel best and most like yourself (as long as your naughty bits are covered, due to local laws).
I need a ride/room share, what do I do?
There's a thread on our Livejournal community just for this purpose!
I want to volunteer/perform/vend, who do I talk to?
